Vandread and Vandread second stage.
Ok. Now, this is, well, one of those ones. You know. One of those ones? You know what I’m talking about. Its a mix of that 3d art every one has been trying to get into since Beast Wars and the typical large eyish, slapstick anime art. I’m not saying it was that bad, but you’ll understand soon enough.
Basically, there’s 2 main planets/sides. One planet/side is all men, the other are all women. The men think women are evil and vicious and stuff. And the women, well, just seem to hate men. So they’re at war. Now, it was only ~100 years since these planets were colonised, so when you hear about what the men think about the women and what they thought was true doesn’t seem to make sense. Are you THAT dumb that you cant remember 100 years back? I mean, not even 2 generations. And this is true, as those from the original colony ships are still alive and even LEADING each side.
So anyway, there’s this one guy. Hibiki. He’s like, a little pansy 3rd class citizen. He tries to prove himself by trying to steal a giant robot from the military. Only he’s like, whoops, I'm in a giant ship and its taking off. Then these women pirates come to steal the ship and then the men decide to destroy the ship rather than let it be captured and they fire this big mega super dooper suck everything into a dimension that doesn’t exist weapon. BUT! This ship from the mens side is the ORIGINAL colony ship from the old times. It has a special "power plant" in it. All ships have them, they’re called Pexis' but this one is special. So anyway this ship and the women’s pirate ship get sucked together by something and then displaced really far away in another galaxy kinda thing. And the two ships have been morphed and such together and some of the giant robots and pirate fighters have been morphed and blah blah blah oh no, what’s this alien robot force trying to kill us, it wouldn’t be Replicaters by any chance?

Whoopdedoo. So anyway its just one long non emotional struggle between 3-4 men that were captured and a whole ship of women. The men come to like the women and the women come to like the men. And blah blah blah oh no, enemies. Fight Fight, Enemies. CHRISTMAS! Hello, your home planet is a dessert, there is no snow, why do you want snow so badly for Christmas to be normal? Half the world from your home planet doesn’t even have snow. OH NO! THATS RIGHT! ITS aMEWEEKHA!! Not to mention there’s the whole homosexual aspect to it. Most people wont notice it until you watch it a second time.
Anyway, its like this: Hot chicks, 1 dumb guy, 1 tall and dark guy, 1 kid like guy and an old person. I mean, clichéd? This aside, the story is actually kinda decent. Its interesting and unique, I’ve never seen a story like this ever. And it has a soft twist which redeems a lot of itself. And the gathering of all the ships at the end was pretty sweet. Its like, bam bam in your face alien enemy.
The art is alright, but in the 3d space fights you tend to get lost sometimes as to what is happening. I see lots of flashy lights and stuff moving. Kinda like playing in traffic on the freeway at night. The second stage of Vandread also has better artwork. Its more refined. But after watching the first part the whole way through you feel as if something is wrong. But you get adjusted again. The music is alright too. Although sometimes its kind of out of place. But we all know the Japanese music culture is ALWAYS out of place. So its forgivable.
In the end though, it was alright. I enjoyed it although some bits, tend to get boring at times. And I’m sick of seeing huge chests on women in anime. Cant a happily engaged/married guy watch anime for a change without having the whole breasts in my face thing going.
My score (50 is the middle mark for average - 0 Worthless - 100 Ace.):
Artwork: 70
Music: 80
Story: 90
Ending: 80
Overall: 75
